CMS announced on May 6, 2026 that eligible Medicare beneficiaries would be able to access certain GLP-1 medications for $50 per month from July 1, 2026 through December 31, 2027, under the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge demonstration. The program operates outside standard Part D plan coverage and uses a central processor for prior authorization, claims, and pharmacy payment.
CMS framed the demonstration as a way to expand affordable access to innovative but costly treatments for seniors. GLP-1 drugs sit at the center of debates over obesity treatment, diabetes management, cardiovascular risk, and Medicare affordability.
What advocates should watch
Focus on eligibility criteria, covered indications, prior authorization requirements, continuity of therapy, and whether the bridge reduces confusion or adds another administrative layer. Push for clear patient-facing eligibility information, accessible appeals, and monitoring of geographic, provider, and pharmacy barriers when the program starts.

Eligibility checklist for advocates
Confirm Part D or integrated MA-PD enrollment, whether the patient's drug is on the demonstration list, and whether step therapy or diagnosis codes still apply before the bridge price takes effect.
Document prior denials and formulary tier changes so patients can compare bridge pricing with existing patient assistance or manufacturer copay cards.
